Welcome to Rotary Club of Sunrise Kolhapur

As name suggest, SUNRISE is a smily, young club. Rotary is very active in Kolhapur. This small city is well known for Automobile Industry, Foundry Industry, Milk Industry. Kolhapur is traditional city of Maharshtra State(India) and is Part of Rotary District 3170. Our Weekly meeting held at 9.00 am. This is the only breakfast Club in District 3170.

Kolhapur with its rich, colourful historical and mythical past stands out among the various cities in Maharastra State. The city is situated on the banks of river Panchaganga and is nestled among the Sahyadri ranges and surrounded by beautiful fortresses and hillocks.

The name Kolhapur originates around Dravidian times when it is said that the aborgines of the region worshipped a powerful mother goddess named 'kolla'. Some say that the name originates around the temple of goddess Mahalaxmi. She, after the great deluge, salvaged the city by using her mace(kur) and hence the name 'Karveer'.

Going by the puranas, some suggest that the city is spiritually vibrant. They say that Lord Vishnu dwells in the form of rocks, Lord Mahadeva in the form of water, goddesses in the form of trees and seers in the form of sand.

Kolhapur has lived through the regimes of various rulers from the ancient past to the modern age. The Hindu era(upto 1347 A.D.), the Muslim period (1347 A.D. to 1700 A.D.) and the maratha reign(1700 A.D. to 1849 A.D.). In 1849 the British took over and Chhattrapati Shahu Maharaj was installed as the ruler of Kolhapur. the Maharaja reign lent a progressive spirit to the city and the king extended his patronage to Arts, Theatre, Film making, Music, Painting, Sculpture, Wrestling and crafts like tanning and jewellery making.

At present the city is supposedly the fourth largest city in Maharastra and boasts a booming commercial centre, flourishing Dairy and Sugar industry. Infact the Sugar Industry is amongst the Richest Belt in India.

the globe. Its history and achievements progressed
year after year introducing many changes with remarkable results to become truly autonomous organization.

  • The first community project of Rotary, Public Comfort came in 1907.
  • Second Rotary Club formed in San Francisco in 1910
  • First Rotary Convention in Chicago in 1910.

  • Adopted Standard Club Constitution in the year 1922
  • Endowment Fund named as the Rotary foundation and Five Trustees were appointed including Arch Klumph to hold invest, manage and administer the fund in the year 1928.
  • First grant of TRF of 500 dollars to International Society for Crippled Children. in 1930.
  • 4WayTest formulated by Rtn. Herbet Taylor in1932.
  • Rotary has emphasized many priorities to focus the visibility of Rotary's advancements and its obligations to the society through avenues of service. :

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION

  • The Rotary Foundation is a jewel in the crown of Rotary. It's programs perfect vehicle to promote those ideals throughout the world by helping humanity in every way possible. The efforts of TRF are channeled to improve the quality of life for those less fortunate. It is gratifying that through the permanent Funds, our dreams and desire for a better world are perpetuated in this Centennial. The foundation has been demonstrating our commitment to the humanitarian, cultural and educational program It's efforts in the following areas of programs have evolved it's own heights.
  • Immunization and other activities to eradicate Polio all over the world.
    Various types of scholarship to study abroad.
  • Group Study Exchange - to learn about the culture and build lifelong friendships with their counterparts and Rotarian hosts.
  • International humanitarian projects through Matching Grants.
  • 3 - H Grants
  • Rotary Grants for University Teachers.
  • Rotary Volunteers providing needed service abroad.
  • Rotary peace Programs meetings.....and so on.
